What kid doesn’t like corn dogs? I saw these in the store and thought I’d give them a try. It’s been years since I’ve a had corn dog. Applegate Naturals Gluten-Free Corn Dogs is found in the freezer section of the local grocery store and has four corn dogs per package. They give directions on reheating by either microwave, about 90 seconds or oven, about 20 minutes. I choose microwave since I figured that’s how most families would heat up the corn dogs, plus I was short on time. I microwaved two dogs and by the end of the 90 seconds, one dog’s corn wrapping began to crack and I wasn’t too sure how it was going to hold up while eating.
First off, the hot dog tasted good – just like a hot dog. But this is a corn dog review. The corn wrapping…well, the cracked one fall apart a bit while I was eating it and I honestly didn’t like the taste of the corn wrapping. It was a little bland and gritty. I tried to dip it into some ketchup, but I had to use a fork to retrieve the lost wrapping. Since it’s mostly kids eating a corn dog, I think that this would make it difficult and a bit messy with the corn wrapping coming off.
I did see that another brand now has gluten-free corn dogs and I’m interested to see how they did with corn wrapping compared to Applegate Naturals. Overall, if these are the only option for a gluten-free corn dog, they really are not the bad, but I’d rather eat something else – like a regular hot dog on a toasted Udi’s bun.
